Tips on How to Lower Electricity Costs

If you’re tired of high electricity bills and increasing electricity costs then here’s a few tips on how you can save on your electric bills starting from today!.

  1. Computers - Turn off your computer monitor. Even when we turn off the computer, most monitors are powered by a different plug. Be sure to turn off the monitor as well as the computer and don’t leave on standby.
  2. Fridges - Let hot food cool to room temperature before putting it in the fridge. Placing hot food straight into the fridge will increase the temperature in the fridge thus requiring more electricity and power to bring the fridge temperature down.
  3. Lighting - Use compact flourescent light bulbs (CFL) instead of regular light bulbs for all your home lighting. While they may cost slightly more to buy, they use less power and electricity over the long term and will result in lower electricity bills.
  4. Laundry - By ensuring you have a full load every time you use the washing machine, you’ll perform less loads and use less electricity. If you have a tumble dryer, set it to dry your clothes after midnight. Most electricity companies charge less during the early hours or non-peak demand times, thus you’ll pay lower electricity costs for your laundry.
  5. Televisions - Turn your TV off at the wall. Even leaving it on standby consumes power. Don’t believe the myth that states you use more electricity turning it on and off then leaving it in standby. Same goes for your radios, games consoles and other electrical appliances that operate on standby. It all adds up.
  6. Insulation - ensure your home has adequate loft or attic insulation. As heat rises it escapes through the roof. If you have an electric heater or air conditioning system it will use more power and electricity if your house is poorly insulated.
  7. Make your own electricity - From as little as $150 you could build your own solar panel or build a wind turbine to make your own electricity. Use this to power home electrical appliances and cut down your dependency on electricity companies, ultimately lowering your electricity costs.
